Tales of a Young Traveler

Liana Cramer is a student at the University of Notre Dame and an official API Student Blogger. Liana studied abroad this summer with API in Granada, Spain.

At the tender age of five I took my first trip abroad, to Paris, the city of lights, love, the Louvre, and Laduree macaroons.

My favorite stop: Le Tour Eifel

As I admired the view from the top, holding my mother with one hand and my father with the other, I fell in love…in love with a foreign and mysterious city and with the adventure of travel.

At the age of 17, after many years of practicing mon français, I returned to that magical city with Academic Programs International. I spent the summer at L’Institut Catholique de Paris perfecting my French, meeting Europeans, and discovering every nook and cranny of Paris.

I could get not get enough of the French language, the charming streets, the cafes, the art museums, and la joie de vivre of that magical city.

By the end of the summer, I had taken on Paris and had had an incredible adventure. But that summer left with more than just a few great memories. It left me with something I later heard was called wanderlust, an insatiable urge to travel the world.

The next summer, thanks to the best parents in the world, I began my conquering of a new language and a new country.

I joined API for a summer in Salamanca, a beautiful city in the northwest of Spain. I attended classes at the University of Salamanca, Spain’s oldest university. Afternoons, I explored Salamanca’s charming streets, parks, monuments, and museums with API friends from across the US and other students studying at the University who came from all across Europe. Weekends, I enjoyed taking excursions with API to the beach in Santander, the castles of Segovia, and the wineries of O’Porto, Portugal.

These summers were “once in a lifetime experiences…” But my adventures have not come to an end yet.

This summer I am headed to Andalucia, Spain with API’s program in Granada.
