Sending Alex Abroad: Will Alex Experience Homesickness?

In this series, Aspire by API’s very own Jill Denton writes about preparing for this summer’s Salamanca program from her unique perspective as a mom.

The Dentons

This week, I wanted to talk to Alex and the rest of my family about the feelings they are anticipating as her departure date draws near.  Here are my questions and their candid responses:

Alex, what is the thing you are most excited about experiencing in Spain?

Just a different culture from U.S., seeing the different places, trying the new foods, meeting new people from different countries. I want to become friends with someone who lives in a different country.

What is the one thing you think you’ll miss most about Austin (or the United States in general)?

I guess just my family and friends. Probably just home, the feeling of being home, knowing where you are and knowing your surroundings.

Do you believe you will experience any homesickness in Salamanca?

I think I might have a little bit of homesickness but I don’t think it’s going to be like crying all night or anything like that – it just seems like everyone experiences a little bit of homesickness.

[Turning to Brett] Dad, do you think you will miss Alex?

Definitely.

Do you think she will experience homesickness?

Yeah a little bit, she’ll appreciate the familiarity of home but hopefully her new experience will be enlightening and exciting.

[Turning to Matthew, Alex’s younger brother] Do you think you will miss Alex?

It’ll be nice getting a long break from Alex and being able to enjoy summer without her.
