Resources for parents of study abroad students

This morning I came across an article on the CBS News “Eye on Parenting” blog called What Parents Need to Know About Student Study Abroad, and thought that this would be a great opportunity to address how API works to keep the parents of our students informed throughout all phases of the study abroad process (from consideration to application, from acceptance to arrival, and finally to reentry). As a parent myself, and working with a company founded by 4 mothers, I truly appreciate the initial angst and confusion that parents may experience when sending their child abroad. Therefore, let me review some of the resources available for parents of API students.

The first information on API and study abroad that many parents come across is the parents section of the API website. Here they may find answers to some of their initial questions and learn about the process of studying abroad through API.

Once a student has been accepted into an API program, both the student and parent receive an information/welcome packet which details the next steps of the acceptance process. In addition, we have created a handbook which guides parents through the process of preparing for the upcoming study abroad session (with information about supplemental application materials, payment policies, safety and security issues, packing, procedures, and more).

Before the student leaves for their study abroad program, parents receive an orientation packet containing information on student housing, emergency procedures, contact information, excursions, and on-site details of the program. Where available, API hosts in-person pre-departure orientation sessions to which parents are invited and strongly encouraged to attend. This presents a perfect opportunity to ask their questions in person, meet the program managers and support staff, and learn from other parents and students.

Finally, we’ve created a Parents/Guardians group on our Facebook page so that parents may connect with each other and ask API questions in that venue.

Of course, parents are always welcome to contact us at 1-800-844-4124 or [email protected] with their questions and/or concerns.

We look forward to guiding parents through this process and are excited to talk about the wonderful opportunities awaiting their students!
