New Program – Pre-Med for Study Abroad Students

API is excited to announce a new Pre-Med Program available to our students in Ireland through University College Dublin (UCD)!

Opportunities in the medical fields have traditionally been difficult to come by for study abroad students, but no longer. In fact, UCD has a history of welcoming study abroad students into a number of academic disciplines that are often restricted to international students (such as architecture, nursing, and sports medicine), and they are continuing this trend with a new pre-med program option.

This highly selective program is intended for juniors and seniors who plan to enter a health profession upon graduation. It offers students opportunities for a clinical experience as well as high-level academic study, while immersing themselves in the largest Science and Medical programs in Ireland.

Developed in consultation with Princeton University and Cornell University, this program comprises courses from both medicine and science departments, and has been designed to cater to U.S. students who wish to experience the opportunity of studying and living abroad while continuing to prepare for graduate school admission in the health profession fields. Students will enjoy direct engagement with UCD academic staff who are experts in their fields and are at the cutting edge of teaching and research.

The opportunity to experience the clinical environment during the study abroad semester is encouraged. Students will attend lectures and laboratory classes which are delivered by instructors who are at the forefront of both teaching and research. The following are some of the suitable scientific and health based subject areas:

  • Anatomy
  • Biochemistry
  • Botany
  • Cell and Molecular Biology
  • Environmental Biology
  • Genetics
  • Pathology
  • Physiology
  • Radiography
  • Zoology

Pre-Medical Study Abroad students will take 6 modules (courses) in a semester, and up to 2 of these may be from non-science/non-medical subjects. These modules may be chosen from a number of programs across the university, including as liberal arts and business.
