We’ll Always Have Paris…

Are you considering studying abroad in the La Ville-Lumière (City of Lights), the city known for romance, poetry, and crêpes? (I threw that last one in for me) 😉 While it’s always interesting to brush up on guidebooks, Victor Hugo, Le Monde, and the like, I find it fascinating to read about the history (particularly the recent – post-World War II history) of Paris.

The University of Chicago Press has made the book “We’ll Always Have Parisavailable for free e-book download. Power up your Kindles, iPads, Nooks, netbooks and laptops and download this complementary book through the end of August! It is worth a read to learn more about the (mis)perceptions that Americans have held about the French through much of the 20th century.  There are chapters that discuss the Marshall Plan and CIA operatives, but most importantly it chronicles the droves of Americans that went to Paris to help rebuild (and refashion) the city after a devastating war, and attempted to counter Soviet and other influences. It discusses how these efforts met with resistance, which colored American perceptions of the French – fascinating stuff!

With that, we’ll leave you with a few images of Paris to whet your appetite to begin your study abroad experience in this amazing city! Enjoy ~
