How To Choose The Right Study Abroad Program For You?

Let’s face it, this is a big decision!

There are a myriad number of programs, providers, and opportunities for you to pick from, but what are the questions you should be asking?

What are the selection criteria you should be using?

Here are some things to consider before choosing your study abroad program:

Language of Instruction
Do you prefer to take classes that are taught in a foreign language or would you prefer classes taught in English? Would you like a combination of language courses and electives taught in English?

Classes
What kinds of classes do you plan to take abroad? What are your academic needs and goals? Are you required to earn specific credit while abroad or are you going to take elective credits? How will your credits transfer at your home university?

Location
What characteristics are you looking for in your host city? Do you prefer a major metropolis or a smaller town? Would you like to study at a large or small university?

Housing
Do you prefer to live in an environment with host locals? Would you like to live with other American students? Are you accustomed to living alone or with a roommate? Do you have any special housing needs, including dietary restrictions?

Duration
How long do you wish to study abroad? Do you want to study for a quarter, semester, summer session or an academic year?

Cost
What features are included in the programs you are considering? Do the benefits of studying abroad for a longer period justify a higher program cost? Do you have a job or other personal or academic commitments at home that make short-term programs more appealing?

Special Features
Are you looking to participate in a sports team or join a student club? Do you want to serve as a volunteer? Would you like to complete an internship?

Any questions? GREAT!
