Go Abroad. Just Do It.

Tyler Wigington studied abroad with API in Madrid, and served as an API Student Blogger. He is now an API Peer Mentor on his home campus, Texas A&M University.

My name is Tyler Wigington and I am so excited to be a Peer Mentor for the 2012/2013 school year! I am a student at Texas A&M University and studied abroad with API in Madrid this past spring semester.

It is easy to say that study abroad is one of my biggest passions. My friends and family sometimes joke that I spend half my time in other countries and the other half planning my next trip abroad. In college, I have participated in a service-learning trip to Costa Rica, studied for a month in Beijing, China, and as I mentioned before, studied in Madrid, Spain for five months.

While school and classes have taught me a lot over the past couple of years, my study abroad experiences have taught me even more – about myself, about other cultures, and about our country. Whether teaching English in a small Costa Rican school, hiking the Great Wall with new Chinese friends, or getting lost in the Madrid alleyways with international friends, I have taken something unique and special away from each experience I have had while abroad.

What I am trying to get at is it doesn’t matter where you go or what you study, going abroad will forever alter your life and quite possibly rock your world. Study abroad empowers you to do great things and understand the beautiful complexities and quirks of the world outside of the United States.

Sure, you might get lost a few times and yes, you might eat a few things that you regret, but you will never forget your experience. Studying abroad will bring you out of your comfort zone, teach you more about the world than the majority of people learn in their lifetime, and help you be the best version of yourself. And that is a wonderful thing. So, I leave you with this: go abroad. Just do it.
