What’s new at API?

Over the course of the past few weeks and months you may have seen our announcements about new programs in Chile, Qatar, and the UAE, but those are just some of the many updates, changes, and new programs that we’ve been working on for the coming year.

Below is a brief rundown of the new program updates:

Two of our programs at the Universidad de Belgrano underwent a slight name change; the program formerly known as Argentine History and Society (with courses in English) is now known as the Argentine and Latin American Studies (in English) program, which is complemented by the program of the same name offered in Spanish to advanced level Spanish speakers.

Our Integrated Studies program at Universidad Torcuato di Tella is now offering courses designed to provide a solid foundation for international students in subjects that their Argentine peers are more familiar with (such as Argentine history and culture).

As mentioned in previous posts, API will begin offering programs in Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, Chile beginning fall 2011!

Viña del Mar

In Valparaíso, API students can enroll in either the Pontifica Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) or the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa Maria (UTFSM). PUCV has a long tradition of welcoming international students, and offers coursework at all levels of Spanish. Advanced-level students may directly enroll with Chilean students, and there is an option to complete a Contemporary Latin American Studies certificate. The UTFSM program is designed for advanced level Spanish speakers, and offers an integrated curriculum with Chilean students. The program begins with an intensive Spanish course prior to the start of the semester, allowing students to focus on their language studies and acclimate to university life.

API is pleased to also offer programs at the Universidad Viña del Mar (UVM).  UVM offers options for all levels of Spanish speakers, and features business courses in English, and additional Spanish electives for advanced students. Other course offerings include environmental studies, education, communication, and architecture. Students can also take part in the “Cultures in Context” course, which allows students to interact and engage directly with Chilean students.

Costa Rica

Our programs in San Joaquín de Flores remain largely unchanged, those there were a few changes to note in our San José programs.

At the International Center for Development Studies (ICDS), the academic content for the semester/year programs was consolidated to offer students a more comprehensive curriculum. The new program is called the Spanish, Social Justice, and Sustainable Development in Latin America program, and includes internship and volunteer possibilities. ICDS is also continuing to offer its spring quarter and summer programs on related topics.

API is excited to announce a new university offering in San José at Veritas University! API’s programs at Veritas are offered for quarter and summer terms, and cover intensive language and culture studies. Semester students may elect to participate in an early start option in order to receive full semester credit for a quarter-length term.

The University of Leeds launched its first summer program in 2010, and 2011 promises to be even better. The offerings include courses focusing on British literature from the Yorkshire area (which gave rise to greats like the Brontë sisters), pop music of northern England (Leeds is a famous venue), country homes (NOT what you think – amazing estates and manors), and a course focusing on London’s 2012 Olympics.

Leeds "country" house

API’s program at the University of the Arts, London has undergone some revisions, including the addition of a special Semester Program for International Students. This option, while still taught during a quarter term (as the traditional integrated UAL programs) allows students to choose their course options and earn a full semester’s credit. It has been purposefully-designed with the U.S. student in mind. The GPA for UAL’s summer program has been lowered to 2.75 as well.

Another of our London partners, the University of Westminster, has expanded its internship offerings and added semester-long graduate program options!

We are also thrilled to announce the addition of another elite school to our academic portfolio – University College London (UCL). Ranked as high as #4 in the world, UCL offers a comprehensive set of courses and disciplines for the motivated and academically strong student.

There weren’t many significant changes to our Paris programs (why mess with a good thing, right?). In our new catalogs and on the website we have made efforts to better explain the credit/course structure, particularly for the many options available in Paris.

There were no major changes in our Budapest program, though we did want to highlight that this location (already known as a great business program) has added a number of business courses (and the business school at Corvinus University recently received EPAS accreditation). Another great draw of Corvinus is their Tandem Partners Program and the new American Corner.

Corvinus University’s Tandem Partners Program facilitates intercultural exchange by matching full-time Hungarian studentswith recently arrived study abroad students. It is a program with mutual benefits! The local Hungarian students are eager to share the Budapest they know so well with their API Tandem Partner, and the API students are encouraged to integrate with local students and learn more about Hungarian life, both inside and out of the university setting.

With help from the U.S. Embassy, Corvinus University has also established an “American Corner” – a center on campus where students can go for academic support, study/computer areas, and American-style entertainment!

Our programs in Cork and Galway continue to be popular, and saw no major changes. Our program at the University of Limerick has opened up courses in new media, video game design, nursing, and more!

Trinity College Dublin

Over the past year we introduced new programs in Dublin at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), University College Dublin (UCD), and the National University of Ireland, Maynooth (NUIM). Each location offers challenging courses and graduate options. TCD is ranked as one of the top 50 universities in the world, and is located in the heart of Dublin. The business school at UCD is AACSB accredited, and it’s engineering programs are ABET accredited. UCD also offers a summer internship program. NUIM offers students the best of both worlds – a real Irish immersion experience within 20 km of downtown Dublin.

Lorenzo de’Medici – the Italian International Institute (LdM) has added an interesting new certificate program in International Conflict Transformation. Offered on a semester basis in conjunction with University of Florence Department of Peace Studies and the National Conflict Resolution Center (NCRC) in San Diego, CA, this program allows students to study a timely topic by some of the foremost experts on the subject from Italy and the U.S.

Our quarter options in Syracuse, Sicily have been condensed to offer a more comprehensive course of study, and are now offered only in the spring quarter term.

Venice Biennale Program

Finally, we will be adding a new summer program in Venice, beginning summer 2011! Centered around the famous Biennale art festival, this program consists of a combination of on-site lectures, studio art workshops, and critiques designed to engage students in the exploration of art and culture.

Our program in Querétaro is continuing to be offered in the summer session (both for Spanish Language and Mexican Culture and Spanish for Medical Professions), though the semester option has been discontinued. Querétaro is a fabulous location for Spanish language immersion, and is a beautiful, safe, and inexpensive alternative to other Spanish language destinations!

No major updates here – but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth taking note of! Krakow is an beautiful city with a fascinating history and great people. Liberal arts and history students in particular would be wise to keep this location in mind when deciding on a study abroad destination!

Souq Waqif, Doha

API has partnered with Qatar University (QU) in Doha, Qatar, one of the oldest and most respected institutions of higher learning in the Middle East. QU’s programs have been recognized as being academically strong (the business school is AACSB accredited; the engineering school is ABET accredited), and the university is undergoing accreditation review by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in the U.S. QU offers unique courses in sports management, pharmacy, and law (including Sharia or Muslim law). The modern campus has a health center, student unions, learning support center, and great sports facilities. All courses are taught in English, and the campus and housing are separated by gender (per local custom).

With so many sites, we’ll take this on city by city:

  • Barcelona – We have added options in our most popular Spanish destination, including two new summer programs at Pompeu Fabra University. One program focuses on film and communication studies, while the other looks at issues of nationalism, using Catalonia as a case study.
  • Bilbao – Our programs at the University of Deusto have  expanded their options to include for-credit internships in business and education.
  • Cádiz – The University of Cádiz is now offering an internship option for students in the Integrated Studies program. Additionally, we’ve added information on the popular API Gives Back projects that feature an environmental focus, and added to the list of available courses (including marine and environmental science).
  • Granada – These programs are largely unchanged, though we have swapped out the Paris spring international excursion for Morocco!
  • Madrid – Our quarter programs at Complutense University now include an option for semester students to earn full-time credit status per term (for an additional fee). Also, at Antonio de Nebrija University, advanced level students may now take courses with Spaniards!
  • Salamanca – There are no major changes to these programs. Salamanca is still one of the best locations to have an authentic, Spanish language and cultural immersion experience!
  • Seville – Beginning-level Spanish speakers or students who wish to take most courses in English have a new option at the University of Seville called the Contemporary Hispanic Studies program! Pablo de Olavide University raised it’s semester GPA to 2.9, reconfigured their summer programs to be offered for only one term as opposed to two.

The American University of Sharjah

API has partnered with the American University of Sharjah (AUS) in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Sharjah is the 3rd largest of 7 emirates that make up the UAE, and is very close to neighboring Dubai (15 km). AUS is located in Sharjah’s Academic City, the crown jewel of the Emirate – and it doesn’t disappoint. The university is accredited in the U.S. by the Middle States Association, and several of its schools/departments bear U.S. accreditations (engineering – ABET, art, architecture and design, and the business school undergoing accreditation review by the AACSB). All courses are conducted in English, and the campus is co-ed (a rarity for the region), although housing is separated by gender. This location is particularly well suited for art, architecture, design, engineering, liberal arts and business students.
