Good-bye has a way of sneaking up on you.

16 julio 2011 • 6:28 en la mañana

To my left, the sun rises. To my right, the full moon says hasta luego. Right down the middle is España.

Where does time go? In five hours, some students will be on there way back to the old routine. Will it become a new routine? Will they take something from their two weeks in Spain and bring it home? How will these two weeks affect the rest of their lives? Will it? I sure hope so and hopefully in a positive way.

It seems like we were all just arriving in a new country for a new experience that would bring a new outlook on how we look at what’s out there.

It was a full two weeks of…

Exploring Madrid

Getting a taste of old in Toledo

Discovering all that Salamanca has to offer

Surfing in Santander, Spain

Flying through the trees at the Forestal Park in Santander

Learning how to cook Paella and Spanish donuts

Taking the idea of salsa dancing and messing it up a little bit (or a lot for some of us)

Biking through the streets and parks of Salamanca

Celebrating the 4th of July with American tapas – McDonald’s fries and McFlurries – in the Plaza Mayor

aspire_4th_plaza_mayor – iPhone

Finding out how well we speak español in real time with Spanish high school students

Exploring “caves” from “18,500” years ago

Eating tapas like we were locals – except for the stinky cheese – the locals can keep that

Hunting the streets throughout Salamanca for clues to the Great Aspire Scavenger Hunt

Kayaking – and splashing – and flipping boats over – and racing – down el rio Tormes

Hanging out on an actual Spanish ranch with actual Spanish bulls riding actual Spanish horses and fighting – more like playing with – actual Spanish bulls – a baby bull

Eating new things and experiencing new flavors – some better than others

And living a different life.

And now…leaving.

Going back to life as you knew it. Family. Friends. “Normal” food. English. Humidity. Air conditioning.

It’s been a great two weeks and I’m looking forward to another two weeks that will be over before you know it. Then, we’ll be watching the sun rise once again to our left and the moon set once again to our right. Before you know it, you’ll be on an airplane back to the old routine. Good-bye has a way of sneaking up on you.

It seems like just yesterday when I was on my way to Paris for six month. Below is what I wrote in my journal on 1 mai 1996. Enjoy the moments of leaving because those moments always lead to something better if you let them.

Hasta luego,

Marc
