When a Dream Becomes a Reality

As you read this, chase whatever thoughts you have without hesitation or fear. There is a reason why you are inclined to do something different. Take the risk, expect to succeed, and if a failure occurs learn from it. If I did not push myself to be here today, I would not be the same Ben. Create memories that will not fade away. Chasing dreams are the best memories.

I am currently living out one of my dreams at this very moment, and these are some of the amazing things I have experienced while here:

1. The Hospitality – The hospitality everyone shows towards others is humbling. If you are hungry you will be fed; if you are tired you will sleep in the homeowners’ bed and they will sleep on the couch for the night. It truly is something I have not seen in a long time.

2. Friendship and Community – The power of friendship and community is outstanding. It is a very strong value here to take care of your fellow neighbor. My mom used to say to never take a ride from strangers, but in Bhutan, that is not a rule. Hitchhiking is another form of transportation here. The words “I love you” and “I’ll miss you” are said regularly. People are so kind towards each other, it truly is a heart-warming experience to see friends interact and have friends to interact with.

3. The home cooked meals. There is no such thing as fast food restaurants in Bhutan. You will not find McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, Subway, or any other fast food place you will find around every corner in the U.S. Every meal I have had here has been a home cooked meal. My health and energy have been on a new level and my new experiment of trying to be vegetarian while being here has been a tremendous success! Bhutan has great potatoes and I really enjoy the delicious red rice. I can eat this stuff for days!

It was so good I forgot to ask what is all was! Potatoes on the upper right bowl, Red rice in the big bowl, and egg and cheese on the lower left bowl

4. The Environment – One thing thing Bhutan is definitely known for is the government’s focus on the environment. It is truly remarkable how everywhere you look even in the city you will see a mountain fully forested. Trees and flowers of all types, birds of all types and colors, huge clean rivers and fresh air. I have been stress free since I have arrived in Bhutan and I wonder if it is because of the environment.

At a peaceful monastery, at it’s center grows this beautiful orange tree (they told me it never gets picked).

If traveling is your dream, there are so many places to go, people to meet, cultures to experience and things to learn. I encourage you to chase your dreams because in the end, what will be of true value? Will it be your friends, money, or you dreams made realities?

Thanks Benjamin! Quite great post on living abroad and Bhutan particularly. The fact that the country cares about its environment is very encouraging. Hope such tendency will be implemented by many others as soon as possible. Humanity has to correct its own mistakes.

Also, such a phenomenon as hospitality is pretty marvelous, only open-minded and kind people are capable of having that. They are genuine and don’t try to pretend to be someone else. Such experience is unforgettable and has a great influence on the whole life and world outlook.
