Despedida o Hasta Luego

Liana Cramer is a student at the University of Notre Dame and an official API Student Blogger. Liana studied abroad this summer with API in Granada, Spain.

“…Ta Luego” she shouted as we stepped out of the residencia, headed for the airport. As we walked down Calle Moral de la Magdelena for the last time, I appreciated those words. She did not say good-bye; she said “hasta luego,” until later.

In fact, it is Spanish tradition to say “hasta luego” when you bid someone adieu. You even say “until later” to shopkeepers, taxi drivers, and waiters…complete strangers.

At first, this struck me as bizarre, but now that my summer in Spain has come to an end, I have decided to embrace the Spanish farewell. I’m not ready to say goodbye to the city of Granada or the incredible friends I made while studying abroad. Hasta luego…until later…. now that I can handle.

My last night in Granada was the perfect ending to an incredible trip. My friends from API and I met up at Bar Poe, a bar at which we made some of our best memories. Nearby we stumbled upon Ingrid, one of our program directors. We also ran into Paddy, the owner of the Irish Bar we frequented to watch the European Cup. And just as we were leaving another friend who lives on the same block as Bar Poe heard us outside her window. She ran down to hug us all one last time… Serendipity was definitely on our side that night.

We promised to each other that we would reunite, and promised to ourselves we would return to Granada soon.

Sitting in the airport, I can take comfort in the parting words of a man who was the house dad of our residencia: he said we should always consider the residencia a home. He then kissed us on each cheek, and per Spanish tradition said, “Hasta Luego”…until later.
