Bienvenida a Granada

Liana Cramer is a student at the University of Notre Dame and an official API Student Blogger. Liana studied abroad this summer with API in Granada, Spain.

“Welcome to Granada,” Ingrid squealed in excited and broken English. The bus rolled to a stop, after a whirlwind tour of Madrid and Toledo, we had arrived in the Spanish city that would be our
home for the summer. I did not know much about Granada, without the size or reputation of Barcelona or Madrid, I was unsure of what to expect. Ingrid, one of API’s directors and a local of the town, was so enthusiastic about the city. And upon arriving at my dormitory, other students who were finishing up a semester in Granada raved to me about their experience. As I went to sleep that first night, I was excited. Studying abroad in Granada would be an adventure, but for some (crazy) reason I was a little skeptical…

Last week was one of Granada’s most important celebrations, Corpus Christi. The city was decorated beautifully and fairs and parades were held to honor the Catholic holiday. On the final day of the la semana de Corpus a friend and I were wandering the streets at night and stumbled upon a flamenco show taking place in one of the city’s beautiful plazas. The plaza was crowded with locals clapping along to the music, dancing in place, or sipping sangria at the surrounding cafes. As we watched on, I thought to myself: only in Granada.
