API Students Earn Top Scholarships

Each year, API awards over $250,000 in scholarships to deserving study abroad students. In addition to API’s scholarships, a number of enterprising students have been awarded several prestigious scholarships. We’d like to give a shout out to some of these that have come to our attention – great job!

Vira I. Heinz

Natalie George of Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania earned the Vira I. Heinz Scholarship for her upcoming study abroad program through API at Lorenzo de’Medici – the Italian International Institute in Florence, Italy. The goal of the Vira I. Heinz scholarship is to “Prepare women leaders for tomorrow’s global challenges.” This unique model creates global citizens by developing leadership and intercultural competency skills instilling passion for life-long learning and civil engagement. More importantly, it is shaping an annual cohort of young women whose decisions and actions as future leaders will have a far-reaching impact locally and potentially globally.

Leiann Mar

Leiann Mar of Washington State University was awarded the API/JCU Diversity Scholarship for study at API’s program at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy. The  award grants a participating minority student a full-tuition scholarship if he or she proved both financial need and a strong desire to study abroad at John Cabot University.

Claire Volke

Finally, Claire Volke of the University of Maryland, College Park was named a recipient of the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship for her study through API in the Integrated Studies with Spaniards program at the University of Seville. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Award recipients are chosen by a competitive selection process and must use the award to defray eligible study abroad costs. This congressionally funded program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and is administered by the Institute of International Education through its Southern Regional Center in Houston, TX.
