5 Tips to Improve Homesickness

Homesickness: something that I assume most people studying abroad feel at some point. I always thought that it had to do with how long you’ve been away from home. I’m now realizing that it more so has to do with how long you will be away from home. 3 weeks is not so bad, but 3 months? That’s quite a long time.

Being at a home university that it only an hour and half away from home lets me see my family more or less whenever I want to. Now, I’m hoping that my family plans a trip here and comes to visit me.

Rather than putting all my hope in them visiting, here is a list of the things I’ve been doing to make the most of my time in Spain:

  1. Wandering. I’ve taken to exploring the city during the day and trying to see as much of my new home as I possibly can.
  2. Books. Though I haven’t found the right ones yet, I’ve spent quite a bit of my time looking through all of the bookshelves in the stores around me. I want to find a book, in Spanish, and use that to help improve my Spanish.
  3. Netflix. Something I swore I wouldn’t do while in Spain. But I find that when I’m going to bed, if I have free time to think, I always end up thinking about how much I miss my family. What better way to deal with that than filling that time with some Stephen Amell, and Emma Stone?
  4. Friends. I’m trying to make as many friends as I can so that I constantly have something to do. Whether that be meeting up with friends in a park or meeting them for coffee and planning trips. Getting out of the house is always good for someone missing home.
  5. Traveling. The biggest reason I will be traveling is to see the whole world. But part of the reason I want to have so many adventures is so that I can have as little free time as possible. Less time to dwell on missing my family.

Staying busy is the key to avoiding homesickness. With such a new city (to me) and lots of Europe that needs exploring, that shouldn’t be too hard to manage.
