What is your dream?

By Emlyn Lee – Managing Director of Cultural Embrace by API and VP of Outreach

“You and I, as citizens, have the obligation to shape the debates of our time – not only with the votes we cast, but with the voices we lift in defense of our most ancient values and enduring ideals.”

This was part of the inauguration speech that President Barack Obama addressed to the American people on Monday, January 21st. A man of hope. A man of vision. A man encouraging his country to move forward. Ironically, inauguration fell on the same day that America honored, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A man of hope. A man who shared his dream. A man who lead his country to equal rights among all people.

Without MLK’s nonviolent leadership and voice, where would we be now? Would we have sworn in President Obama for his second term as President of the United States? What values and ideals make your voice sing? Bigger question…what are you doing about it? Whatever your cause is. Sing. Lift your voice. Take action. We, as citizens, are obligated to do more than just ‘talk the talk;’ we need to ‘walk the walk,’ and share our hopes…our dreams…our visions. Collaboratively and peacefully.

This is a gracious gift we are granted as Americans that we often take for granted. The ability to make choices. The freedom to share our opinions. The opportunities to pursue happiness. No matter how varied our definition of happiness is, or what our individual opinions are about politics, religion, the economy, sexuality, etc…we get a voice. Use it to shape your home, community, and nation to be a better place to live.

As we come to the end of our first month of 2013, let’s carry on the vision and dreams of our nation’s great leaders throughout the year. Let’s continue to lift our voice and carry our actions to do and be better for our world. I encourage you to share your hopes, your visions, and your dreams with us at Cultural Embrace. We’ll spend this year focusing on hopes and dreams and will have various themes per month, and would love to hear from you. In February, we’ll focus our dreams and hopes with love, I look forward to hearing the melodies that you produce, and learning how your local and global communities will blend and harmonize to produce sweet tunes together. As MLK, Jr. mentioned in his “I have a dream” speech, we, as individuals, and collectively, can make our dreams a positive reality,

“As we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back…so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream…”
