Whether you are preparing to leave the country to serve a local community as a volunteer in China, move abroad and in with a host family as a Language Living participant in Brazil, or setting off for Australia to work on a cattle ranch in the Outback, we are pretty sure you have a lot on your mind and a lot to do before you go.

To help you save time and (most importantly) money when making your upcoming travel arrangements, here are a few tips for saving when preparing for your upcoming adventure abroad.

Free Passport Photos

Don’t waste your time and money waiting in line at the post office. Sites like Epassportphoto.com allow you to get your passport photos done for free or printed and sent to you for cheap.

Free Language Courses

Worried your inability to speak your new host country’s language might hold you back, but you don’t have the hundreds of dollars it would cost to purchase language software or the time to take a course? There are several websites and apps that allow you to do much more than just brush up on your foreign language skills. Sites like FSI Language Courses and Open Culture and apps like Duolingo and WeSpeke offer and/or direct  you to a lot of quality content that will have you eager and able to mingle with the locals before you’ve even landed.

Free Audio Books and E-Books

While half of the time spent abroad may feel like you’re flying by the seat of your pants, the other half will likely be spent just sitting in them, as travel always tends to provide us with equal amounts of downtime as does it thrilling adventure. To make the most of your 14-plus hour flight across the world, check out Bookshouldbefree.com and similar sites that offer free audio books and e-books.

Free Local Guides

Once you’ve arrived, you will likely be eager to get to know your new local environment, and what better way to do that than with a new local friend. While CE by API offers participants an on-site orientation and host city introduction, one might also be interested in gaining additional exposure. Global Greeters is a website that links visitor with locals excited to tote them about their home town, showing them all it has to offer.

A couple other sites that may help with your travel preparations are Price Line’s Hotel Freebies, which allows you to sort hotels based on free amenities and Yapta or Tingo, which alert travelers to flight price drops for flights already purchased.
