Tell your Senators that you support international education!

The following information is provided from NAFSA’s Connecting our World site.

In the midst of a tense budget debate in Washington, a temporary measure was passed by Congress and signed into law last week to fund the federal government through March 18, 2011. This measure was passed not only to keep the federal government in operation, but also to allow more time for Congress to consider and pass legislation to fund the government for the remainder of the 2011 fiscal year, which ends September 30.

As you may know, the House of Representatives recently passed H.R. 1 (The Fiscal Year Continuing Appropriations Act for FY 2011), which includes serious cuts to the international affairs and education budgets, zeroes out funding for the U.S. Institute of Peace, and reduces the Peace Corps budget by $115 million. A new measure, which NAFSA supports, was introduced in the Senate last Friday that restores the funding cuts made by the House. The Senate is planning to bring both bills to the floor for a vote this week, possibly even today.

If you haven’t already done so, please take a few minutes to send the below letter to your senators urging them to support the Senate alternative, and to reject H.R. 1. They need to know how a sustained investment in international education contributes to U.S. economic growth, leadership, and security.

Please take just a few minutes to send a letter to your U.S. Senator expressing your support for international education and study abroad, and the role it plays in U.S. citizen diplomacy.
