New Summer Study Abroad Programs in Quito, Ecuador

Starting Summer 2016, API is excited to announce two new summer study abroad program options in Quito, Ecuador! Are you interested in getting an inside look at how a government office functions or perhaps looking to take a few course electives over the summer?

The Government Internship Program at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) is designed for students interested in public policy and administration, social development and international cooperation. Available for rising juniors and seniors, this program offers students the opportunity to gain professional experience within a local government office while improving Spanish language skills. In combination with the internship hours, an in-class component and corresponding assignments allow students to earn 3 U.S. semester credits. Additional credits are available if students complete a Spanish course and pay an additional fee.

“From a learning perspective, Ecuador has much to teach. As a student, I was struck by the poverty I saw in certain pockets of the city and was eager to learn its root causes. The city today, amid modern conveniences and luxury, continues to struggle with poverty among certain groups. Students have the opportunity to learn much about the power of organizing by witnessing the conviction of the indigenous groups in Ecuador, continuing to fight for the recognition of indigenous rights and cultural preservation.” – Courtney Greene, API Senior VP of Student and University Relations

The Integrated Liberal Arts Program at USFQ allows students to complete a Spanish language course in combination with 1-2 electives with local students, earning anywhere from 3-9 credits. The majority of USFQ summer courses are taught in Spanish so students are encouraged to have completed a minimum of four semesters of college-level Spanish or the equivalent, thereby allowing some students the opportunity to take courses with local students. Some subject offerings include biological and environmental sciences, business, social sciences and humanities, among many others.
