API’s summer study abroad carbon offset project – Indonesia

API is excited to once again announce the success of our carbon offset program based on summer 2011 student participation. In partnership with Carbon Clear, API’s program provides students the opportunity to address the environmental impact of their study abroad travel.

This summer, students’ contributions went to support a great project on the Indonesian island of Java. As the world’s most populous island, access to energy sources is critical. To reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy production on Java, this project is upgrading three power station units on the island so that they utilize renewable geothermal energy instead of traditional fossil fuels. The zero-emission electricity generated here is then transmitted to the regional grid.

In addition to the clear environmental benefits, the project also provides numerous social and economic benefits. For example, new employment opportunities were created, and the electricity generated improves the reliability of the grid and increases the availability of power to villages in the region. This in turn creates an infrastructure that supports new economic development. Further, the project contributes to sustainable development by delivering both technological know now and investment to a developing region.

Though geothermal resources are abundant in this area, without carbon finance, the upgrades to the power plant would not have been possible. The project is certified to the independent VCS standard.

The offset credits funded by our student contributions have been officially retired in an offset registry account maintained by Carbon Clear. Both Carbon Clear’s carbon credit registry and financial accounts are independently reviewed on an annual basis. Where they exist, the company uses independent their-party registries to hold and retire their carbon credits. This further assures legitimacy and avoidance of double-counting offsets.
