Reflecting on the Global Leadership Academy

This post comes from Krakow alumna and current Global Leader at Hartwick College, Madison Goddard. API’s Global Leadership Academy is accepting applications NOW for the spring semester! Apply on the website here. Apply by JANUARY 1 to join the Global Leadership Academy for the spring for a SHORTER COMMITMENT- in the spring term, you’ll share your study abroad story at three separate events and then attend monthly webinars. Questions? Email alumni@apiabroad.com for more information.

Being a part of API’s Global Leadership Academy has been an incredible opportunity to meet and connect with like-minded individuals across the country and on my home campus, explore my own core values and priorities, and most importantly continue living my study abroad experience. Applying to this program has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, second only to spending a year in Krakow!

No one really talks about how challenging it is to return home after living abroad. You’re a different person, everything you left behind is different too and it can be a real struggle trying to find your place again. For a lot of people, studying abroad is something that happens and then its over and done with and behind you but this program forces you to make it an integral part of your everyday life and to think about things in a way you may not have considered before. If you aren’t ready for your study abroad experience to be over and if international education has changed your life like it changed mine, I cannot recommend the Global Leadership Academy highly enough. The program allows you a chance to reflect on your experiences, rediscover who you are and what is important to you and provides an outlet to channel your energy into something meaningful and productive.

The API staff is an incredible resource and my fellow Global Leaders have truly become like a second study abroad family. I can’t stress enough how important it is to have a support network of people who know exactly what you’re going through. Everyone you connect with through the program is passionate about the benefits of international education and honestly I would have been totally lost this year without the API Global Leadership Academy to keep me grounded and give me some direction. As cheesy as it may sound, studying abroad is a gift that needs to be shared; it’s our responsibility to tell our stories and help others have the same experiences we’ve been lucky enough to have.

The requirements for the program itself are really not that demanding. If you choose to apply to the year-long program (which you should!) you’ll spend a weekend training at the API headquarters in Austin. This was seriously the most inspiring and empowering weekend of my life. After that, you are expected to plan and host events on your university campus (6 per semester for year-long participants and 3 for semester participants) and to complete a few assignments such as reflection questions and attending webinars. The program is self-paced and you get out of it as much as you are willing to put in.

I was hesitant to apply for the Global Leadership Academy at first but I’m so glad I did and I hope you will consider it! You won’t regret it.
