Why Quito?

API offers the opportunity to study abroad in Quito, Ecuador; the capital of Ecuador, and a city nestled right in the Andes Mountains. We asked API resident director Andrea, why Quito is a great choice for a semester abroad:

Spread across a spectacular Andean valley and surrounded by volcanic peaks, Quito’s setting alone is enough to strike you speechless. Quito is the closest capital to the sun at 2,850 meters above sea level with a temperate climate, never too cold or too hot. The Historic District of Quito is considered the largest and best preserved in the Americas and the first city to be declared a World Heritage Site. Visitors can admire an invaluable treasure that includes monasteries and churches that house magnificent paintings, sculptures, and woodcarvings from the Quiteño Art School, which originated over five centuries ago.

As the doorway to Ecuador, Quito is strategically located allowing access to: The Pacific coast with beaches, fishing towns and exquisite cuisine; the Andes with its Volcano Avenue, with astonishing views; the Amazon with all its green and extraordinary magic, the unique Galapagos Islands which narrate the evolution of species before the very eyes of visitors, and where Darwin elaborated his famous theory of evolution. Quito is your starting point.

An hour’s trip away, in the surrounding areas of Quito, visitors can enjoy a series of activities at different haciendas located in the moorlands of the Andes: hot springs, horseback riding, hiking, mountaineering, rural tourism, and more. In the Northwest, visitors can discover the beauty and wealth of the Cloud Forest, a true paradise for bird watching where there are over 500 different species of birds, particularly hummingbirds.

These reasons helped Quito to win, for the 4th consecutive year, the South America’s Leading Destination award in the 2016 World Travel Awards!”
