Leaving Abroad: A Poem

This post is from our official student blogger, Sarah Hasselberger. Sarah is a Senior from Wagner College studying in Dublin, Ireland.

Leaving Abroad: A Poem

The end of the semester is nearing and the only word I can think to describe how I feel is

Melancholy.

My mind keeps racing through the lasts:

The last assignment, the last class, the last exam,

The last time I will have a professor speaking in an Irish accent.

The last time I become confused over a cultural difference.

The last time I will be asked, what’s your opinion, based solely on my American identity.

The last time my peers will look at me, wide eyed, as they hear my accent.

The last time in a classroom that Irish students will surround me.

All of the stress and conflict that I experienced throughout the semester,

Gone, lifted like a heavy weight off of my shoulders.

As the weight lifts, the sadness creeps in.

I realize that this is

The last bus ride to the city centre to go out to dinner or shopping.

The last embarrassing moment as I struggle with paying with euros.

The last night out with my friends.

The last time I’ll see the cute Irish boy I have been hanging out with.

The last time I’ll swoon over being surrounded by the accents.

The last time.

I feel melancholy:

Incredibly happy and grateful for my journey, and

Itching to go home.

But connected so strongly to this city,

This country,

And the life that I have developed for myself as a student studying abroad.

There is only one more night before I leave.

There is only one more shower I will take in this country.

There is only one more time I will go to sleep in Ireland.

Tomorrow I will wake up, and I will head home.

I will head back to the United States.

Back to my home, my family, my dog, my cat, my friends,

My bathtub, my favorite snacks, my American Netflix, my bed.

But this is the last time.

And I feel melancholy.

Till we meet again, Ireland.

May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back. May the sunshine warm upon your face.
