The Farmstay Experience in Australia and New Zealand

This opportunity enables people to live and work on a variety of organic properties in exchange for accommodation and meals for a minimum of 2 weeks. Help on the land and home for 4-6 hours a day on family-owned organic farms and learn aspects of organic growing, bio-dynamics and permaculture. If you want to have a hands-on experience, learn and share organic and sustainable ways of living then this is the type of experience you’re looking for.

Usually, you live with your host and are expected to join in and cooperate with the day-to-day activities. You may be asked to help with a variety of tasks like sowing seed, making compost, gardening, planting, cutting wood, weeding, harvesting, packing, milking, feeding, fencing, making mud-bricks, wine making, cheese making and bread making. Many farmstay helpers actually become so inspired by the experience that they end up changing their lifestyles and even setting up their own organic farms!

Who are the farm owners?

Those who have a farm, smallholding, garden, allotment, vineyard or woodland and follow organic or sustainability principles are who apply to host helpers in their homes to provide an extra pair of hands and help with various projects they are busy with.

Some hosts make a living off their land, others are homesteaders interested in self-sufficiency, and some are families whereas others are individuals. There are also cooperatives, communities, and eco-villages. They are motivated to enable people to learn about organic growing techniques and demonstrate an alternative way of life, though their main inspiration as hosts is their contribution to improving communication and aiding growth within the worldwide organic movement.
