New API Study Abroad Programs in Bhutan and Portugal!

API is excited to announce two new study abroad programs in Bhutan and Portugal which were unveiled at the 2014 NAFSA Annual Conference and Expo!

 Thimphu, Bhutan

Looking for something completely new? Wanting to really step out of your comfort zone and experience a different culture and way of life? Tired of the “traditional” study abroad destinations? Well, do we have a new experience for you! Beginning with the spring 2015 term, API will offer a study abroad program in the Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan.

Located between India and China, Bhutan is a landlocked Himalayan paradise. Often referred to as the “last Shangri-la”, Bhutan is known for its natural beauty, diverse landscapes, friendly people, and its official national philosophy of “Gross National Happiness“. API students will study with Bhutanese students at Royal Thimphu College, Bhutan’s first and only private university institution, administered by the Royal University of Bhutan. Students will take 3-4 courses in subjects such as accounting, computer science/IT, literary criticism and theory, natural resources management, and sustainable development. They will also take a credit-bearing internship with a local or governmental agency (such as the Gross National Happiness Commission) or an international NGO.

This program will include a number of unique and physically demanding excursions and cultural activities, and applicants should be aware that it may not be a suitable location for those with health concerns (particularly cardiovascular issues).

Lisbon, Portugal

API is excited to announce a new partnership with the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth (UMass Dartmouth) to administer and promote its successful UMass in Lisbon study abroad program, beginning this fall (2014). Lisbon is one of Europe’s most beautiful and historically important capital cities; in fact, CNN recently reported that Lisbon might be “Europe’s coolest city” and, in 2012, Lisbon was named European City of the Year.

This program offers students the opportunity to choose from subjects offered in English in Portuguese history and culture from UMass Dartmouth, as well as subjects from two prestigious Portuguese universities. Courses will be available in English in international business from The University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE), and Portuguese language courses (taught at all levels) will be offered through the New University of Lisbon (NOVA).

API students in Lisbon will select from one of two academic tracks (International Business or Liberal Arts and Humanities), and will live with other API students in off-campus apartments. This program will offer a very affordable and academically strong option for study abroad in Portugal!

As with all API programs, comprehensive pre-departure and on-site orientation and support, medical and life insurance, organized cultural activities and excursions, cell phones, resident directors, and much more are included.

Additional details, including application information, will be available on the API website soon.
